Spring Equinox 2012 - (March 20th)
The Vernal Equinox also known as Spring Equinox will occur on March 20, 2012, at exactly 05:14 EDT.
The Sun will cross directly over the Earth's equator causing what is known as equal night.
Each year thousand of people from all around the world flock to Chichen Itza and Dzibilchaltun to witness the solar event at these two sacred sites in the Yucatan.
Both of these sacred temples mark the first day of spring using the light of the sun and the light of the first full moon. It is known as the "Equinoccio de Primavera".
Both solar spectacles can be witnessed on same day.
At Dzibilchaltun spectators will crowd during the early morning hours to see the sun rising through the two doors at the Temple of the Seven Dolls. As the sun rises the sunlight will illuminate the Sacbe or sacred road of light. It will light up the ruin texts or stelea, marking the first day of the year.
During the archaeo-astronomical phenomenon at Chichen Itza the afternoon sunlight envelops El Castillo pyramid’s western banister on the central stairway causing the formation of seven isosceles triangles. Theses shadows come together to form what looks like the body of a 120 foot long rattlesnake. The snakelike shadow creature that creeps downwards until it joins a huge serpent's head at the bottom of the stairway. Sunset is the best time to see the equinox at Chichen Itza.
